Hard times

This holiday season has not been the brightest for many. The following are some images from the food bank, which is thousands of pounds under its quota of food, and from holiday shoppers. I also created a short multimedia piece on shopping in a recession here.

Sean...just wanted to say it's been great working with you. You have a great vision and eye and your dedication to a story far exceeds others at your level. I look forward to many...many more great images from you. I think the best advice I can give you is something that Cecil Beaton said...“Be daring, be different, be impractical, be anything that will assert integrity of purpose and imaginative vision against the play-it-safers, the creatures of the commonplace, the slaves of the ordinary.” Keep up the good work and keep in touch.

What a fascinating site! I particularly enjoyed the photos covering Montgomery during the election--you captured the spirit of Montgomery quite well.

Anyway, I work with an organization called First Person Arts, and we're looking for documentary photographers to help spread the word about our nationwide competition First Person America: In These Hard Times (seems perfect, given the title of this post, huh?).

We're a Philadelphia-based non-profit organization dedicated to memoir and documentary art in all forms, and this year our goal is to attract essays, photos and films from all 50 states documenting how individuals and communities are coping with economic challenges. You can find out more about the competition, prizes and judges at http://firstpersonamerica.org
